Advances in technology have brought about many changes in the way we conduct our lives and the evidence can be seen all around us in computers, mobile devices, networks and software applications. The aim of this article is to highlight some of the tools available for social interaction that could have the potential to improve the learning experience for students in vocational education. In the process of identifying some of these new technologies, thought has been given to the theories that support their use, and the methodology behind their implementation. However, it must be stressed that although evidence exists to substantiate the use of technologies for learning, the environment in which learning takes place can have a considerable influence on the extent of their success. With this in mind, the question ‘Can Web 2.0 tools benefit learners in vocational education?’ intends to solicit responses from those with an interest in the subject, and who would like to express an opinion relating to their own education establishment.
